1968 Evinrude 9.5
Picked up this motor on Craigslist for $125. He said he inherited it, doesn't know if it ran. He said he took it to a guy who tried to fix it. Looked like fresh thread lock on the core plug of the carburetor. Choke handle busted off and one face plate with broken clips. Looks like is sat with the lower end in the chain for at least a season with all the crud built up. He did throw in a vintage metal gas can, but no hose. I fired it up and It ran, but would not idle without the choke on, and then only very rough. Also, did not pump water very well, poured out from under the cowl. Looking forward to the rebuild.
1973 Johnson 9.5
This motor I picked up on Craigslist for $300. Previous owner used it for years with his dad fishing in Hayward Wis, and did not use it anywhere else. His dad was now too old to get into the small boats they rented, and so he parted with it. Came with a tank and hose. Great shape. Ran fine. Pretty clean, although I did regrease and clean her up more. Changed out the lower unit oil and turned her loose. Smoked a bit at first, but I think it was from old gas. Pumps water good.
1964 Johnson 9.5
This motor was in the shed when we bought our cabin on South Turtle. It ran like a dream, but was not a good looker. It originally had a pull start handle made out of a stick that I since replaced with a NOS Johnson pull handle I bought on ebay. She still sports an Evinrude (blue) lower unit (from a 67 or newer), caused likely from someone not draining and refilling her lower unit over winter. She just developed a shift problem, likely a bad prop, a clutch dog or prop bushing failure. I may be tearing down the lower unit in the spring, and replacing it with a johnson lower unit from a parts 1965 Johnson 9.5 I just picked up on craigslist.
